At approximately 4:30 a.m., deputies with the North Hampton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of shots fired at Randall Circle in the Nassawadox area. When deputies arrived, they encountered a suspect armed with a rifle. The suspect fired several shots at deputies while they were still in their patrol vehicles before fleeing the scene by car. Deputies found a female victim with gunshot wounds at the scene. She was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Authorities also determined that one deputy had been struck in the ballistic vest. According to Sheriff David Doughty, the deputy was not seriously injured.
At approximately 5:00 a.m., deputies received another call indicating that the suspect was headed toward Parallel Road. When deputies arrived, they found the suspect firing the same rifle at two residences. Deputies returned fire, struck the suspect, and took him into custody. Three individuals at the scene were injured by rifle fire and transported to the hospital.
The suspect and the injured deputy have not been identified. During the initial investigation, authorities found another deceased individual on Seaside Road. That victim is reportedly a relative of the suspect. The investigation remains ongoing.
