Two deputies with the East Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Sheriff's Department (EBRSD) were shot early Thursday morning. At approximately 10:30 a.m. Thursday, deputies with the EBRSD were assisting a Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Task Force with executing a search warrant as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation. The Task Force members announced their presence over a loudspeaker and began to enter the residence to execute the search warrant. Upon entering the home, two EBRSD deputies encountered an individual in the home who opened fire on them, striking both. The deputies returned fire, striking and fatally wounding the individual.
Both deputies were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. One deputy was struck in the bullet-resistant vest he was wearing and was not injured. The second deputy was treated for injuries and released later that afternoon. At a press conference Thursday afternoon, East Baton Rouge Sheriff Sid J Gautreaux stated “This incident exemplifies how dangerous this job can be every day. I’m grateful our deputies are not more seriously injured. I was fortunate to spend time with our wounded deputy and his family at the hospital, and I am happy to announce that he is expected to make a full recovery. The second deputy was fortunately only shot in his bulletproof vest and was also checked out and cleared. This is exactly why we make training a priority at the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office.” The investigation is ongoing.
