Two officers with the Phoenix, Arizona, Police Department (PPD) were shot Tuesday evening. At approximately 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, PPD officers responded to a report of an individual attempting to break into a vehicle. Upon arrival, officers observed an individual who fled the area on foot when he saw the officers. A foot pursuit ensued, and during the foot pursuit, the suspect exchanged gunfire with the pursuing officers. During that exchange of gunfire, two Phoenix officers were shot.
Both officers were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. In a subsequent press conference, Phoenix Police Chief Michael Sullivan stated, "One officer was saved by his ballistic vest, the second is fighting for his life." Chief Sullivan also stated the officer who was shot in the vest is in stable condition, and the other officer is in critical condition. The individual who shot the officers was located by other officers later Tuesday evening and taken into custody. He is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
