A New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer was shot Thursday afternoon. At approximately 11:45 a.m. Thursday, NYPD officers attempted to serve an arrest warrant on a 43-year-old sex offender wanted for shooting a man during an argument in a bar this past October. Two female occupants of the apartment told officers that the wanted subject was barricaded in the apartment’s bathroom with a gun. Officers called for assistance from the NYPD Emergency Services Unit, and a several hours long barricade situation began. Officers attempted to contact the subject with both a small camera and a drone, but the subject destroyed both items. The officers then sent in an “avatar”—a camera on wheels, and an arrest team followed close behind. The subject then came out of the bathroom, opening fire on the officers, striking one of them. The officers returned fire, striking the suspect.
According to NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey, the suspect fired four shots—three of which struck the ballistic-resistant shields the officers were carrying, and the fourth struck an officer in the ballistic-resistant vest he was wearing. Chief Maddrey stated “the bullets could’ve easily been inside our officers.” The injured officers and the wanted subject were transported to a local hospital, where the wanted subject died from his injuries. The officers were treated for “minor injuries” and released.
