A Waukesha, Wisconsin police officer was shot Wednesday afternoon. At approximately 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Waukesha Police responded to a report by a landlord that one of his female tenants was acting erratically. On arrival, officers located a female in the basement of the home, who fired a handgun at officers without warning, striking one of the officers in the chest. Officers returned fire, striking the woman, who died at the scene from her injuries.
The injured officer, wearing a ballistic-resistant vest, was struck in both the vest and his body-worn camera. He and another officer, who also sustained minor non-gunshot related injuries, were transported to a local hospital, where they were treated and released. At a press conference, Waukesha Police Captain Dan Baumann stated, "If that officer was not wearing his ballistic [vest], the round would have most likely struck him somewhere in his upper chest, which is one of the vital organs, and we potentially could have had a different story," The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
