An officer with the Miami-Dade, Florida, Police Department was shot Monday morning. At approximately 10 a.m. Monday, officers with the Miami-Dade Police Department were investigating a reported shooting when they observed four males with firearms standing in front of a nearby residence. As officers approached, the men with firearms opened fire on the officers. In the exchange of gunfire one of the officers was struck. The men fled the scene on foot and barricaded themselves in a nearby home. After a brief standoff with a SWAT team, police took at least five individuals into custody.
The injured officer was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries to his face, which reported occurred when a round struck his ballistic-resistant vest and shrapnel from that round struck the officer in the face. At a Monday afternoon news conference, Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie Daniels stated that βHe [the officer who was shot] was wearing his vest and we do believe that the vest has caused him to be able to go home and be with his family.β The officer was released from the hospital the same day. Two of the individuals taken into custody have been charged in relation to the shooting of the officer.
