A deputy with the Lowndes County, Georgia, Sheriff's Office (LCSO) was shot early Friday morning. At about 1:30 a.m. Friday, four LCSO deputies were working off-duty employment at various bars in the town of Remerton, GA. At one of these bars, an argument broke out between two men that escalated into a shootout, which prompted police response. When additional officers arrived on the scene, more shots were fired at the officers, striking one of deputies on the scene. Two other men (civilians) who were shot during these incidents died at the scene from their injuries.

In a subsequent press release, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) stated that the deputy who had been shot had been transported to a local hospital for treatment and was expected to survive because “[the deputy] was wearing a [ballistic-resistant] vest that prevented the bullet from causing more serious injury”. Police recovered weapons at both scenes connected to this incident. A GBI medical examiner will conduct autopsies on the two men that died and the GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney for review.
