A Dallas, Texas police officer was shot Thursday afternoon. At approximately 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dallas Police responded to a report of shots fired at a gas station. As officers arrived, they witnessed a man firing into a vehicle, who upon seeing the arriving police vehicles, opened fire on responding officers. Officers returned fire as the shooter got into a white pickup truck and fled the scene, leading officers on a pursuit. During the pursuit, the driver of the pickup turned into oncoming traffic and headed towards the pursuing officers, again opening fire on them. During this exchange of gunfire, one of the pursuing officers was struck in the chest by one of the rounds fired by the operator of the pickup. The driver of the pickup truck eluded police but was located and arrested several hours later.
The occupant of the vehicle at the original shooting scene died at the scene of his injuries. The officer shot in the chest during the pursuit, who was wearing a ballistic-resistant vest, was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is listed in stable condition. The investigation is ongoing.
