A Lee County, Florida deputy sheriff was shot early Monday morning. At approximately 12:40 a.m. on Monday, Lee County deputies were called to respond to a verbal altercation. After handling this incident, a brief time later they were called back to the same location for a domestic assault. As the deputies arrived a second time, the 28-year-old male resident approached deputies, pulled out a handgun and opened fire, striking one deputy in the chest. Deputies returned fire, striking and fatally wounding the suspect.
The injured deputy, who was wearing a ballistic-resistant vest that stopped the round fired by the suspect, was transported to a local hospital for observation. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
