A Modesto, California police officer was shot and seriously wounded while attempting to serve a search warrant. At approximately 11:30 pm on Saturday, Modesto officers responded to an apartment to serve a search warrant related to suspected drug activity. Occupants of the apartment opened fire on police, striking one officer several times, once in his ballistic-resistant vest, and another below his vest in the abdomen. The officer was transported to a local hospital, where he underwent multiple surgeries. The shot to his abdomen damaged an artery to his leg, and as a result he may have to have a portion of his leg amputated. Four suspects were taken into custody and charged with various offenses, including the assault on the officers. A fifth suspect remains at large.
