An officer with the Metropolitan Washington DC Police Department (MPD) was shot Thursday evening. At 11:30 p.m. Thursday, MPD officers were monitoring a basketball game at a court in the 1200 block of Canal St. SW. As the game ended, officers were walking through the court when they heard gunshots. One of the officers was stuck in the chest, and woman who was also walking through the area was struck by gunfire. A third victim, another female, arrived at a nearby hospital a brief time after the incident, reporting that she had been at the basketball court when the gunfire broke out and she had also been struck by gunfire.
The officer and the first injured woman were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. According to a statement made by the D.C. Police Union, a bullet struck the officer in the chest. The union said the officer was wearing a vest and was not hurt seriously. Both women were treated for what police described as “non-life-threatening injuries.” A review of surveillance cameras in the area determined a red sport utility vehicle was seen leaving the area of the incident at the time of the shooting, and MPD is seeking the owner or occupants of that vehicle. The investigation is continuing.
