An officer with the Morrow, Georgia, Police Department (MPD) was shot Wednesday evening. At approximately 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, MPD officers responded to a 911 call from a local restaurant, where it was reported that an individual involved in an altercation at the restaurant had displayed a handgun tucked in the waistband of his pants to other individuals involved in the altercation. When officers arrived, the man who displayed the firearm was pointed out to the responding officers. As the officers approached the man, he opened fire on the officers, striking one in the chest, and fled the area on foot. Officers pursued the man on foot, and in another exchange of gunfire, an officer shot and wounded the man, at which point they were able to take him into custody.
The officer and the assailant were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The officer shot in the chest only received minor injuries, as he was struck in the bullet-resistant vest he was wearing. In a statement to the press, MPD Morrow Police Major Greg Tatroe says the officer’s bulletproof vest stopped the bullet and saved his life. Both the officer and the assailant remain in the hospital for treatment, but Major Tatroe stated that the officer will be released in a day or so. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.
