A North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper was shot Monday evening. At approximately 7 p.m. Monday evening, a North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper stopped on Interstate 26 westbound near Asheville to assist a disabled motorist. As the trooper approached the vehicle, the motorist produced a firearm and shot the Trooper in the chest. The bullets were stopped by the ballistic-resistant vest the trooper was wearing. The trooper returned fire, striking, and fatally wounding the assailant. According to a statement released by the NC Highway Patrol the next day, the trooper “was transported to a local hospital for observation and has since been released.” The trooper has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the North Carolina Bureau of Investigation.
