An officer with the Jasper, Texas, Police Department was shot early Tuesday morning. At approximately 5 a.m. Tuesday, officers with the Jasper Police Department arrived at a residence to serve a search warrant. Two officers entered the residence and began the process of “clearing” each room. During this process, the officers encountered the 67-year-old resident of the home, who opened fire on the officers, striking one in the chest. The officers were able to return fire, fatally wounding the resident.
The wounded officer was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released for minor injuries. According to a statement released by Jasper Police, the officer was struck in his ballistic-resistant vest, which prevented more severe injury. Texas Rangers with the Texas Department of Public Safety are investigating of the shooting which is standard procedure when a police officer is involved in a shooting. Jasper Police will also be conducting their own internal review of the shooting.
