An Indianapolis, Indiana officer is recovering after being shot five times, once in her ballistic-resistant vest, after an exchange of gunfire during the vehicle and foot pursuit of a suspect from another shooting incident.
At approximately 3:40 pm, a 21-year-old suspect allegedly shot two of his neighbors for unknown reasons, then fled in his SUV. IMPD officers tried to stop the suspect and his vehicle a short distance away. The suspect got out of his vehicle and opened fire on the officers, striking one officer’s vehicle, before getting back in his SUV and fleeing once again. He stopped his vehicle a short distance later, where he once again opened fire on police, and gunfire continued to be exchanged between the suspect and police. As a result, a two-year veteran female officer of IMPD was struck five times—twice in her left leg, twice in her right arm, and once in the chest--on her ballistic-resistant vest--below her body camera. The suspect was also shot during the exchange of gunfire with police. He was transported to a local hospital and is listed in serious condition.
The officer who was shot was also transported to a local hospital, where she was treated and released. She is expected to make a full recovery from her injuries.
