A detective with the Baltimore, Maryland, Police Department (BPD) was shot Friday evening. At approximately 10:25 p.m. Friday, officers with the BPD responded to the 3400 block of Hanover Street to investigate a report of an individual indiscriminately firing a handgun in the direction of a nearby group of people; fortunately, no one had been injured as a result. Police identified a person of interest in the area and began speaking with him as he sat on the steps of a residence. Without warning, the individual stood up, produced a handgun concealed in his clothing and opened fire on the investigating officers, striking one of them, a detective, in the chest. Officers returned fire, striking and seriously wounding the individual.
The detective and the individual who were shot were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of their injuries. According to Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley, the detective shot in the chest survived due to the ballistic-resistant vest he was wearing and is expected to be released from the hospital the next day. Commissioner Worley also stated the individual who was shot by police died from his injuries at the hospital. The Maryland Office of the Attorney General is investigating the police use of force incident per standard procedures, and the criminal investigation is ongoing.
