Two Charles County, Maryland deputies were shot, one in his ballistic vest, on Monday afternoon. At approximately 3 pm, the deputies were attempting to serve an outstanding arrest warrant at a residence. As the officers approached the individual in his room inside the residence, he opened fire on the officers. One deputy was struck twice in the leg, with one shot fracturing his tibia. The other deputy was struck twice, once in his arm and once in the chest, where the round was stopped by the ballistic-resistant vest he was wearing. Both officers were able to retreat from the residence, and they were airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
A several hours-long standoff occurred between the police and the suspect, who barricaded himself in his home. After being unable to contact the suspect, officers entered the residence, finding the suspect dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The officers both experienced a lengthy recovery from their injuries but are expected to return to full duty.
