A Raleigh, North Carolina, police officer was shot Wednesday evening. At approximately 7:20 p.m. Raleigh officers were called to respond to a reported armed robbery in progress at a convenience store. As the first two officers arrived on the scene, a witness pointed them toward a man leaving the scene in an adjacent parking lot. One of the officers headed towards the man, ordering him to stop. The man turned and produced a handgun, firing at the officer and striking him in the chest. The officer returned fire, and the second officer, upon hearing the gunshots, responded and engaged, firing at the suspect. The suspect fell to ground, dropping both his handgun and a bag, which was later determined to contain money and merchandise stolen during the robbery.
Medical aid was summoned and administered to the suspect shot by police and the officer struck in the chest in his ballistic-resistant vest. Both were transported to a nearby hospital, where the suspect died from his injuries. The officer was treated for minor injuries and released. The investigation into the officer-involved shooting is ongoing.
