An officer with the Columbus, Ohio, Police Department was shot Sunday evening. At approximately 4:40 p.m. Sunday, deputies with the Madison County (OH) Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a report of shots fired inside of an Amazon fulfillment center in West Jefferson. Upon arrival, deputies determined that the shots had been fired by an individual employed as a contract security guard at the fulfillment center, but no one was injured, and the shooter had left the scene prior to the deputies' arrival. At approximately 6 pm, Columbus (OH) Police responded to the area of Georgeville and Climes Roads, as a person matching the description of the shooter at the earlier incident at the Amazon facility was reportedly in the area. Police encountered the subject, who opened fire on police. In the exchange of gunfire, an officer was struck in the chest by gunfire, and the shooter was also struck by gunfire.
Both the officer and the shooter were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The officer, who was wearing a ballistic-resistant vest at the time of the incident, suffered what police described as “non-life-threatening injuries,” and is reported to be in stable condition. The shooter, who was identified as the individual involved in the earlier incident at the Amazon facility, died of his injuries at the hospital. The investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
