A NYPD officer is recovering at home after being shot three times, once in his ballistic-resistant vest, after an exchange of gunfire with a suspect from another shooting incident that occurred several blocks away.
At approximately 11:11 pm, NYPD officers were called to respond to a reported shooting at Madison Street and Broadway in Brooklyn. The investigation revealed that an individual approached a white SUV and opened fire on its three occupants, all accused gang members — killing one, injuring another, and leaving another unhurt, based on video at the scene. The vehicle crashed a short distance away.
Several officers began searching the area for the shooter. About five blocks away from the scene of the first incident, officers saw a man walking briskly near Saratoga Park. The officers got out of the vehicle to investigate, and "immediately, the male pulls a firearm, turns on the officers and begins to shoot," NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said. One of the officers was struck three times — in the vest, in the right leg, and in the buttocks, Shea said. The alleged shooter, identified as Boyce Hayward, 26, is an accused gang member and was struck in the leg during the exchange of gunfire with police. He was detained and his firearm recovered. He was transported to a local hospital and expected to survive.
The officer who was shot was also transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released the next day. He is expected to make a full recovery from his injuries.
