Two Benton Harbor, Michigan, police officers are recovering after being shot on Thursday night. At approximately 11:15 pm, the officers located a 32-year-old individual wanted on two outstanding felony warrants and an unserved personal protection order. This individual had previously evaded arrest when approached by officers and had posted to his social media accounts boasting about evading police and having firearms with multiple extended magazines. As the officers approached, the individual opened fire on the officers, striking the first officer once in his ballistic-resistant vest and once in his leg. The second officer was struck three times, twice in his ballistic-resistant vest and once in his leg. In the exchange of gunfire between the suspect and police, he was struck multiple times and died at the scene from his injuries.
The two officers were transported to a nearby hospital, where the first officer remains under observation after having surgery to repair the wound to his leg. The second officer, whose leg injury was described by police during a press conference as "more superficial," was treated and released.
