A Bastrop County, Texas, sheriff’s deputy is recovering at a local hospital after being shot three times, twice in his ballistic-resistant vest, on Sunday evening. At approximately 10:30 pm, the deputy located a pickup truck at a convenience store that matched the description of a truck reported to have left the scene of a criminal mischief complaint nearby. A check of the truck’s license plate revealed the owner of the truck was wanted on a parole violation for a burglary. As the deputy approached the truck, the occupant of the truck turned and fired three shots from the driver’s door window at the deputy, striking the deputy once in the forearm and twice on his ballistic-resistant vest. The suspect then fled on foot and escaped attempts to apprehend him. The suspect was arrested the next day and faces multiple charges in connection with this incident, in addition to the outstanding parole violation charge.
The deputy was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he is undergoing treatment for his injuries, which are classified as “non-life threatening.” According to Bastrop County Sheriff Maurice Cook, the deputy’s vest “likely saved his life.”
