A Sergeant with the Oak Lawn, Illinois, Police Department was shot Monday afternoon. Shortly after 12 noon Monday, an off-duty Sergeant with the Oak Lawn Police Department was working as a private security officer for a local trucking company when he and another security officer were called to break up a verbal dispute that escalated into an armed confrontation. One of the individuals fired multiple rounds at the Sergeant, striking him in his ballistic-resistant vest and his leg. Despite his injuries, the Sergeant and the other security officer were able to restrain the shooter when his firearm jammed and held him until police arrived to take him into custody.
The injured Sergeant was transported to a local hospital for further treatment. Oak Lawn Police released the following statement: “Our sergeant is indeed still here with us today by the grace of God, a Kevlar vest, and the bravery of his actions, never backing down even after being shot and the bravery of the other security guard. Together they confronted an armed, violent individual and ultimately prevented further violence to innocent people.” The shooter has been charged with felony first-degree attempted murder.
