Two officers with the Chicago, Illinois, Police Department were injured early Sunday morning when they encountered gunfire. At approximately 2:00 a.m. Sunday, two officers from the Chicago PD were on routine patrol in the 900 block of North Harding Avenue when four unidentified suspects opened fire on another group of men walking down the street. Several rounds penetrated the windshield of the squad car both officers were in, with one round striking an officer in his ballistic-resistant vest. The other officer was not struck by the gunfire but was injured by shards of the windshield glass shattered by the gunfire striking him in the face.
The injured officers were transported to a local hospital for further treatment, but in a statement released by police, are expected to make a full recovery. An 18-year-old male with a gunshot wound was discovered nearby on North Harding Avenue and is believed to be another victim of the same shooting incident; he was also transported to a nearby hospital where he is reported to be in serious condition. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
