A Flowood, Mississippi, police officer was shot Sunday afternoon. At approximately 3:50 p.m. on Sunday, officers with the Flowood Police stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. As the vehicle stopped, an occupant of the vehicle got out and fled the scene on foot. Officers chased the fleeing occupant and deployed a Taser to stop the individual from fleeing. Upon being struck by one of the Taser probes, the individual turned, produced a handgun, and opened fire on the officers. Officers returned fire, and in the exchange of gunfire, both the fleeing individual and one of the officers were struck by gunfire.
Aid was rendered at the scene to both the individual and the officer that was shot; however, the individual died at the scene from his injuries. The injured officer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. In a subsequent press conference, Flowood Police Chief Eric Zetterholm stated that the officer was shot in the stomach area, about two inches above his duty belt, but that the officer avoided more serious injury as the round impacted the ballistic-resistant vest he was wearing at the time of incident. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation of the incident.
