Three officers with the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. Police Department were shot Wednesday morning. At approximately 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, officers from the Metropolitan Washington D.C. Police Department were attempting to serve an arrest warrant at a residence in the 5000 block of Hanna Place SE. When the officers were denied entry into the residence by the occupant, they attempted to forcibly enter the residence. The occupant of the residence then opened fire on the officers through a door, striking three of them. The officers, who were not seriously injured, retreated to a safe location, and established a perimeter around the residence. Several schools in the area were placed on lockdown as a precaution. After a 13-hour standoff, police took the 48-year-old occupant of the residence into custody for the arrest warrant. Additional charges related to the shooting of the officers are pending the completion of an investigation.
The injured officers were transported to a local hospital for further treatment. At a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Metropolitan DC Police Chief Pamela Smith stated the officers are “in good spirits” and recovering from their injuries and that she and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser visited them at the hospital. According to D.C. Police Union Chairman Greggory Pemberton, one officer was shot in the hand, another was shot in the foot or leg, and a third officer was struck twice, but his ballistic gear stopped the bullets. A fourth officer was injured but was not shot.
