A Philadelphia, Pennsylvania SWAT officer’s ballistic-resistant vest protected him when he was shot Friday afternoon. Just after 12:30 pm, a team of Philadelphia SWAT officers were attempting to serve an arrest warrant on an individual wanted for a probation violation when the suspect opened fire on them. The lead officer of SWAT team said he heard several pops, followed by a stinging in his chest. He observed several holes in the nearby drywall and the door, and he realized he had been hit. The suspect attempted to escape by jumping out the window of his third story apartment onto an adjacent rooftop, where he was confronted by a team of backup officers. He pointed his gun at the officers, who fired several shots at the suspect, but missed. The suspect attempted to dispose of his weapon and flee on foot but was taken into custody.
The officer was examined at the scene and suffered no injuries other than a red mark on his chest underneath where the bullet impacted his vest.
The suspect was charged with multiple offenses, including attempted murder, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and drug manufacturing-related offenses. The gun he used in the assault was determined to be stolen from a nearby jurisdiction.
