A Lexington, Kentucky police officer's ballistic-resistant vest protected him when he was shot Saturday afternoon, according to Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers. At approximately 12:50 pm, several Lexington officers approached a group of four juveniles who they believed were involved in an earlier shooting incident. During the investigation, one of the juveniles opened fire on the officers, striking one in his ballistic-resistant vest. Another officer on the scene returned fire, but no one was injured as a result. Three of the juveniles were detained, and one is still at large.
The officer was transported to a local hospital. As of late Saturday afternoon, Chief Weathers said the officer was still undergoing treatment for what is reported to be non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident remains under investigation by both the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team and the Lexington Police Department Public Integrity Unit.
