A Milton, Georgia police officer was shot Friday afternoon. At about 12 noon on Friday, a multi-jurisdictional SWAT team was assisting the Roswell, Georgia, Police Department with the service of search and arrest warrants at a residence in Roswell. The SWAT team established a perimeter around the residence, and as officers approached the front of the residence a man believed to the person named in the arrest warrant was seen in the front yard of the residence. When he saw police approaching, he ran inside the residence and attempted to flee out the back door and through the back yard. Upon entering the back yard, the subject encountered one of the SWAT officers stationed at the rear of the residence. The subject produced a handgun and opened fire on the officer, striking him in the chest. The officer returned fire, striking and fatally wounding the subject.

The SWAT officer who was shot, identified in a subsequent press release by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) as a Milton, Georgia, police officer, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of what were described as “minor injuries,” because the officer was struck in the ballistic-resistant vest he was wearing at the time of incident. The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
