An officer with the East Rochester, New York, Police Department was shot Sunday afternoon. At approximately 3:40 p.m. Sunday, two East Rochester officers responded to a 911 call. On arrival, officers determined that a domestic dispute was occurring. One of the officers observed a male, later identified as one of the residents of the home, standing in the driveway and holding a handgun, which he then concealed in his pocket. The officer ordered the male resident to halt and show his hands, but the man refused to comply with the officer’s directions and walked inside his residence. The officer followed the man inside the residence, once again ordering him to remove his hands from his pockets. The man drew the handgun from his pocket, pointed it at the officer and fired several shots, striking the officer in the upper abdomen area. The officer was able to return fire, striking the man with several shots.
Both the officer and the male resident were treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital for further treatment. According to East Rochester Police Chief Michael Brandenburg, the officer, who was struck in the ballistic-resistant vest that he was wearing, was treated, and released. The male resident remains in the hospital for treatment. The investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Division. In collaboration with the District Attorney's office, the Sheriff's Office is assessing and determining charges to be filed against the suspect.
