A Newton, Texas, Police Officer is recovering after being shot Saturday morning. At approximately 9:40 a.m., the Chief of Police for the Newton, TX Police Department was among a group of peace officers assisting Newton County Constables with service of an eviction notice. After contacting the occupants inside the residence, who informed officers they would not allow them in, officers tried to make a forced entry into the residence. Both occupants of the residence opened fire on the officers, with one of the shots striking the Newton Police Chief in the back. The round was stopped by the ballistic-resistant vest the Chief was wearing. After a brief standoff, the residents surrendered to police and were taken into custody.
The Newton Police Chief was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released the next day. The two residents who shot at the officers were charged with multiple offenses and are each being held on a $1 million bond awaiting trial.
