Deputies with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office initially responded to a call of shots fired on February 11, 2026, around 9pm near Edenborough Road. Deputies were unable to locate the suspect and left the scene; around 3am the following morning, deputies were dispatched to the area again as reports were received that the suspect was back in the area. Deputies attempted to make a traffic stop near Maybank Highway and River Road, but the suspect fled, and a chase pursued. The suspect fired shots at deputies near Caroline Lane while on foot, striking a deputy in the chest. According to Sheriff Ritchie, “By the grace of God, the deputy’s body armor stopped that bullet.”

Sheriff’s deputies returned fire, striking and killing the unidentified suspect. The deputy that was shot was treated on scene and released. Sheriff Ritchie stated that the deputy is doing fine. This case is still being investigated.
