An officer with the Santa Fe, New Mexico, Police Department was shot Sunday afternoon. Shortly after 1 p.m. on Sunday, officers with the Santa Fe, New Mexico, Police Department were involved in a vehicle pursuit with an individual wanted on multiple outstanding arrest warrants. Santa Fe Police were able to stop the vehicle after deploying tire-deflation devices. The wanted individual fled from the vehicle with a gun in his hand and ran to get into another nearby car, operated by a person known to the wanted individual, when he was confronted by officers. In the ensuing gunfire, a Santa Fe officer was struck multiple times—in his ballistic-resistant vest and his arm.
The injured officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment. According to Santa Fe Police Deputy Chief Ben Valdez, “The officer was wearing a ballistic protective vest at the time, which provided protection to their torso,” and that the officer was listed in stable condition. The investigation is ongoing, but it has been determined the officer was shot by “friendly fire,” rounds fired by other officers at the scene.
