A Stockton, California police officer was shot early Wednesday morning. At approximately 3 a.m. Wednesday morning, Stockton Police responded to a reported armed carjacking. On arrival, police determined that a 69-year-old motorist had been beaten with a firearm during the carjacking. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of what police described as “moderate to severe injuries.” A description of the stolen vehicle was broadcast, and a brief time later Stockton Police located the carjacked vehicle in a residential area about three miles from the original incident. A short pursuit began, during which an occupant of the carjacked vehicle opened fire on the pursuing police vehicle. The operator of the police vehicle, a Sergeant with 9 years of service, was struck multiple times in the upper torso. Police were able to detain multiple suspects at the scene.
The injured officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. At a press conference, Stockton Police Chief Stanley McFadden stated that the officer was “shot squarely in the chest” and that the Sergeant’s ballistic-resistant vest “saved his life.” One of the suspects is facing multiple charges associated with the incident, including carjacking, attempted murder, and assault with a deadly weapon. The investigation is ongoing.
