A Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania police officer was shot Saturday morning. At approximately 5:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, Pittsburgh Police responded to a report of a woman who had been shot in the leg. On arrival, officers engaged in a foot pursuit with a male suspect who fled the scene as police arrived. A brief time later and several blocks away, another officer on foot patrol observed a male matching the description of the fleeing suspect walking near a church. As the officer approached the male subject, the subject pulled out what was later determined to be a homemade firearm and shot the officer, who was wearing a ballistic-resistant vest, in the chest. The officer was able to take the individual into custody without further incident.
Both the officer and the suspect, who was found to have a gunshot injury to his shoulder that investigation determined occurred during an exchange of gunfire during the original shooting incident prior to police arrival, were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The officer was treated for minor injuries and released, and the suspect is in stable condition and expected to survive. During a news conference, Pittsburgh Police Chief Scott Schubert stated “We are grateful that our officer is out of the hospital and doing well following this traumatic experience. There is no question that his ballistic vest saved his life.” The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
