A Clay County, Texas, deputy sheriff was shot Monday evening during a traffic stop. According to Clay County Sheriff Jeff Lyde, as the deputy approached a white Cadillac he had stopped for a traffic violation, the driver opened fire on the deputy, striking him in the upper chest. Sheriff Lyde stated the deputy was wearing his ballistic-resistant vest and was able to return fire as the driver fled the scene in the Cadillac. The deputy did not realize at first that he had been injured, and attempted to pursue the vehicle, until he realized he had been shot. He was transported to a local hospital, where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The Cadillac involved in the incident was located unoccupied early Tuesday morning by Wichita Falls police near a local hospital, and the suspected gunman remains at large.
