An Albuquerque, New Mexico, police officer was one of four Albuquerque officers injured by gunfire Thursday morning during a response to a robbery. At approximately 10 am, Albuquerque officers were called to respond to a robbery. Upon encountering the suspects, gunfire was exchanged, resulting in four officers and one of the suspects being injured. According to University of New Mexico Hospital Trauma Director Dr. Sonlee West, one officer was struck in the neck above his ballistic-resistant vest, a second officer was struck in the forearm, and a third officer was injured by shrapnel hitting his eye. A fourth officer was struck in his ballistic-resistant vest. Dr. West said that “if he [the officer] had not had his bulletproof vest on, he would have sustained catastrophic injuries.”. The four officers and the suspect are being treated at UNMH for their injuries.
