A Sheffield, Alabama police officer was killed, and a second officer is recovering after being shot Friday afternoon by a suspect in another shooting incident. The officers responded to a local shopping mall on Friday for a report of an individual laying in the road. Investigation revealed this person had been shot, and officers located a suspect in a vehicle nearby, which they began to follow. Upon stopping the vehicle, the driver opened fire on the officers, striking two of them. One, Sgt. Nick Risner, succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital the following morning. A second officer was shot and struck in his ballistic-resistant vest, and was treated and released from a local hospital. The suspect was taken into custody and faces multiple charges.
