A Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) police officer is recovering after being shot early Friday morning. At approximately 3:30 a.m., Uintah County (Utah) deputies and BIA officers were called to respond to a fight at a motel in Ballard. On arrival, officers encountered a man who opened fire on them, striking the BIA officer in his ballistic-resistant vest. Officers returned fire, striking the man multiple times. Officers rendered medical aid to the man at the scene, and he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries. The BIA officer was treated and released from the hospital.
