A Philadelphia, Pennsylvania police officer was shot multiple times Wednesday afternoon. At approximately 3:30 p.m., two Philadelphia officers were investigating a suspicious vehicle. As one of the officers approached the passenger side of the vehicle, the passenger got out of the vehicle and turned away from the officer. As the officer attempted to detain the vehicle passenger, the passenger turned and shot the officer, striking him twice. One shot impacted the ballistic-resistant vest the officer was wearing and was stopped by the vest; the other round struck the officer in the stomach below the vest and exited his back. The assailant, another passenger, and the vehicle driver fled on foot. The injured officer’s partner immediately transported him to a nearby hospital, where he underwent surgery for his injuries. Investigators were able to determine the identity of the passenger who shot the officer, and a SWAT team located him a short time later and took him into custody without further incident. The driver of the vehicle and the other passenger were also located and apprehended.
The injured officer is currently in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
