Just before dawn on July 13, 2015, a 39-year-old sergeant with the St. Louis Police Department was treated and released from a local hospital after shots fired during an ambush were stopped by his ballistic-resistant vest. The officer was off-duty but wearing his uniform while working a second job in neighborhood security when a car carrying four men pulled up beside his unmarked personal vehicle, and one man got out and opened fire. There had been no previous contact between the officer and the suspect, who fled the scene on foot after the sergeant fired back. The car’s driver was arrested later in the day and one of the passengers turned himself in.
